Who makes it

A family, three generations in.

Your garment is built by a family-owned workshop in Rochester, New York. Members of the family still work in the business today. They build your garment from the pattern we create together, with full canvas and 20+ hours of handwork in a standard garment.

You can choose American Woolen cloth, woven in the United States, or imported cloth from mills in Italy and England. Either way, the garment is cut and sewn in Rochester. Everything else about working with me stays the same.

Who it is for

Your wedding, a promotion, an anniversary, the day you want to remember what you wore. A suit made for one day that you will keep wearing long after it.

The one that lasts

Full canvas and hand finishing are built to hold their shape, and to be altered and repaired for years. I look after it with you, so it stays yours.

The one with a maker

You know who built it and where. A family workshop, a pattern drawn for your body, and a clothier who answers when you call.

What the investment buys

  • Hours of hand work. 20+ hours in the 20-Hour Make, 30+ in the 30-Hour Make.
  • A fit proven before the cut. The first-fit garment means your cloth is only cut once the pattern is right.
  • A pattern you keep. Every garment after the first starts from something that already knows your body.
  • One clothier throughout. I measure you, fit you, and look after the garment for as long as you own it.

The 20-Hour and 30-Hour Make

Two levels of hand finishing.

20-Hour Make. 20+ hours of handwork, full canvas, hand-finished collar, lapels and armholes, real sleeve buttonholes, a personal label and sweat shields.

30-Hour Make. 30+ hours of handwork. It adds handmade front buttonholes, hand-set lining and a hand-finished waistband, and on trousers an extra interior pocket and silk knees.

Choose the 30-Hour Make when the extra hours of hand work matter to you. Every American Made garment is built to the same pattern and the same standard.

The timeline

Plan on 12 to 14 weeks.

American Made tuxedos take about 16 to 20 weeks, and American Made cannot be rushed. For a wedding, plan on about five months. If you have a date, tell me at the start and I will plan backwards from it.

  1. Week 1

    Consultation and measurements

We choose your cloth from the swatch books, settle the styling and take your measurements and posture notes.

  2. Weeks 2 to 5

    First-fit garment

A first-fit garment is made to your pattern in inexpensive cloth. You try it on and we adjust the pattern before anything is cut in your cloth.

  3. Weeks 5 to 11

    Cutting and handwork

The workshop cuts your cloth from the corrected pattern and builds the garment. This is where most of the 20+ hours of handwork happens.

  4. Weeks 11 to 14

    Delivery and final fitting

The garment comes to me, we do a final fitting, and I make any adjustments before you take it home.

The cloth

Choose from the swatch books.

American Made garments are made in a wide range of cloth, from American Woolen to imported cloth from the finest mills in the world. I bring the swatch books to your fitting and we choose together.

American Woolen cloth is woven in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, from American-grown wool. Most of its cloths sit in the middle of the price range, close to the average above.

Cloth is priced in bands. The starting price above is the first band, and the average is the middle of the range. I will tell you which band your cloth is in, and where it is woven, before you decide.

Questions

Before you decide.

Who makes my garment?

A family-owned workshop in Rochester, New York, run by the same family for three generations. Members of the family still work in the business today. They build your garment from the pattern we make together, with 20+ hours of handwork.

What does American Made mean here?

Your garment is cut and sewn in Rochester, New York, by a family-owned workshop, from the cloth you choose. Your cloth is either American Woolen, a mill in the United States, or imported from mills in places like Italy and England. I will tell you which yours is and where it is woven. I say it this way on purpose: it is accurate, and you can check it.

How is it different from made to measure?

It is a different choice, not a higher rung. Made to measure and handmade to measure are the right answer for most wardrobes. American Made is for clients who want their garment built in the United States, with a longer build and more handwork.

Why 12 to 14 weeks?

Two reasons. A first-fit garment is made and fitted before your cloth is cut, and every garment gets 20+ hours of handwork. Tuxedos take about 16 to 20 weeks. American Made is not available as a rush order, so if you have a date, tell me at the start and I will plan backwards from it. I will give you a firm estimate at your fitting.

What is the difference between the 20-Hour and 30-Hour Make?

Every American Made garment has 20+ hours of handwork. The 30-Hour Make brings that to 30+ hours with more hand finishing, including handmade front buttonholes, hand-set lining, a hand-finished waistband, and on trousers an extra interior pocket and silk knees. It is an upgrade you choose per garment.

How do I pay?

Half up front to begin, with the balance when your garment arrives, or the full amount at the start. The deposit becomes non-refundable once your cloth is cut, because a cut garment is made for one person. Changes before cutting may cost extra, and I will tell you before they do.

What if it does not fit?

That is what the first-fit garment is for. Adjustments at the final fitting are included, and after delivery you get one complimentary round of adjustments within 30 days. I make them personally. If the fit still cannot be corrected, the Fit Promise in my terms applies. Once you approve your first fit the pattern is set, so later changes of preference are not covered. A defect in the workmanship goes back to the workshop to be corrected.

Can I order a shirt or women's clothing this way?

Not at launch. American Made covers suits, jackets and sport coats, trousers, waistcoats, tuxedos and overcoats. Shirts and women's clothing stay in the made-to-measure line.
